The route focuses on the Valle d’Itria and Adriatic coast, with historic towns, incredible food, and unforgettable scenery along the way.

Where to Stay for This Itinerary
One of the best ways to explore Puglia is by staying in one central location and making short day trips to nearby towns.
This allows you to enjoy the region without constantly changing hotels.
Night 1: Stay in Bari
After arriving at Bari International Airport, spend your first night in the Bari Vecchia (old town) area.
It’s an easy 20-minute drive from the airport and a wonderful place to unwind after your flight. Wander the historic streets, enjoy dinner near the harbor, and settle into the slower rhythm of southern Italy.
Nights 2–5: Base Yourself in Martina Franca
The next morning, drive about 1 hour south to Martina Franca, located in the heart of the Valle d’Itria.
This elegant Baroque town sits perfectly between many of Puglia’s most beautiful destinations.
From Martina Franca you can easily reach:
Alberobello — 20 minutes
Locorotondo — 10 minutes
Ostuni — 40 minutes
Polignano a Mare — 45 minutes
Monopoli — 40 minutes
Lecce — 1 hour 20 minutes
Because of this central location, Martina Franca makes one of the best home bases for exploring Puglia.
If you're looking for a charming place to stay directly in the historic center, our restored apartments — Dimora Pietra Dorata and Dimora Pietra Chiara — offer a comfortable and authentic base within walking distance of Martina Franca’s cafés, piazzas, and restaurants.
Driving in Puglia
A car is the best way to explore Puglia.
While trains connect some larger cities, many of the region’s most beautiful towns are easiest to reach by car. Fortunately, driving distances are short and scenic, often passing through olive groves, vineyards, and countryside dotted with traditional trulli houses.
Most of the destinations in this itinerary are within 20–60 minutes of one another.
Day 1: Bari & Bari Vecchia
Your journey begins in Bari, the capital of Puglia.
Before heading into the countryside, spend some time exploring Bari Vecchia, the city’s atmospheric old town.
Highlights include:
• Basilica di San Nicola – an important pilgrimage site
• Cathedral of San Sabino
• Strada delle Orecchiette – where local grandmothers still make fresh pasta by hand
The narrow stone streets, lively piazzas, and seaside promenades give you your first taste of authentic Puglian culture.
Stay overnight in Bari and prepare to head into the countryside the following morning. It’s just about a 50 minute drive to Martina Franca as your home base.
Day 2: Alberobello & the Trulli Countryside
Drive Time from Martina Franca: ~20 minutes
Today you’ll visit one of Puglia’s most famous destinations: Alberobello.
This UNESCO World Heritage town is known for its iconic trulli houses — traditional limestone dwellings with cone-shaped roofs that look almost like something from a fairy tale.
Explore:
• Rione Monti, the most photographed district
• Aia Piccola, a quieter residential area
• artisan shops and cafés hidden among the stone streets
After exploring Alberobello, take a scenic drive through the surrounding countryside where trulli houses and ancient olive groves fill the landscape.
Return to Martina Franca for dinner in the historic center.
Martina Franca & Locorotondo
Drive Time to Locorotondo: ~10 minutes
Spend the morning exploring Martina Franca, one of the most elegant towns in Puglia.
The historic center is known for its refined Baroque architecture and relaxed piazzas.
Highlights include:

• charming whitewashed streets lined with balconies and flowers
After lunch, drive to nearby Locorotondo, widely considered one of the most beautiful towns in Italy.
Here you'll find:

Return to Martina Franca in the evening for dinner and a leisurely stroll through the illuminated historic center.
Day 4: Ostuni & the Adriatic Coast
Drive Time from Martina Franca: ~40 minutes
Today’s destination is Ostuni, famously known as the White City.
Perched on a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Ostuni’s historic center is a maze of whitewashed alleys and staircases.

• charming cafés and artisan shops
After exploring the town, head down to the Adriatic coastline where you'll find beautiful beaches and nature reserves.
Popular spots include:

• local beach clubs along the Adriatic
Enjoy a relaxing afternoon by the sea before returning inland.
Day 5: Lecce – The Baroque Capital of Puglia
Drive Time from Martina Franca: ~1 hour 20 minutes
End your itinerary with a visit to Lecce, often called the Florence of the South.
The city is famous for its elaborate Baroque architecture carved from warm golden limestone.
Highlights include:
• Piazza del Duomo
• Basilica di Santa Croce
• the Roman amphitheater in Piazza Sant’Oronzo
The historic center is filled with lively piazzas, artisan shops, and excellent restaurants.
You may also consider spending one night in Lecce before returning to Martina Franca.
The city has a wonderful evening atmosphere, and the illuminated Baroque buildings make the historic center especially magical after dark.
If You Have 7 Days in Puglia
With two extra days, you can explore more of the Adriatic coastline.
Polignano a Mare
Drive Time from Martina Franca: ~45 minutes
Polignano a Mare sits dramatically atop limestone cliffs above the Adriatic Sea. Walk through the historic center and visit Lama Monachile, one of the most photographed beaches in Italy.
Monopoli
Drive Time from Martina Franca: ~40 minutes
Monopoli offers a beautiful harbor filled with colorful fishing boats and a charming historic center surrounded by seaside walls.
The relaxed atmosphere and excellent seafood restaurants make it one of the most enjoyable towns on the coast.
If You Have 10 Days in Puglia
With ten days in Puglia, you can extend your trip into the Salento region in the southern part of the peninsula.
After visiting Lecce, spend a few nights exploring the southern coastline before returning north
Nights 6–7: Stay in Lecce
Use Lecce as your base for exploring the Salento region.
From here you can easily visit:
Otranto
Drive Time from Lecce: ~45 minutes
Otranto sits along the Adriatic coast and is famous for its crystal-clear water and beautiful harbor.
Explore the medieval streets, visit Otranto Cathedral, and relax at nearby beaches with some of the clearest water in southern Italy.
Gallipoli
Drive Time from Lecce: ~1 hour
Gallipoli’s historic center sits on a small island connected to the mainland by a bridge.
The old town is filled with Baroque churches, golden stone buildings, and views of the Ionian Sea in every direction.
It’s also known for its long sandy beaches and spectacular sunsets.
Nights 8–9: Return to Martina Franca
After exploring Salento, drive about 1 hour 45 minutes back to Martina Franca and spend another couple of nights enjoying the Valle d’Itria.
This gives you time to revisit favorite towns or simply relax in the historic center before your departure.
Day 10: Polignano a Mare & Monopoli (On the Way to Bari)
On your final day, head back toward Bari and stop along the Adriatic coast.
Polignano a Mare offers dramatic cliff views and turquoise water, while nearby Monopoli provides a charming harbor perfect for a final seaside lunch.
